Here is a brief introduction to the state of California

Capital City: Sacramento
Nicknames: Golden State
Population over 36 million residents

State’s Flag: Adopted in 1911, is patterned after the one designed and flown by American settlers during their 1846 revolt against Mexico.

Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed up the Pacific coast from Mexico in June 1542. Three months later he reached San Diego Bay, and then proceeded north, sailing right passed the Golden Gate – a deep strait that connects the ocean to the calm waters of San Francisco Bay. But California was not established for the next 200 years.

In 1769 Capitan Gaspar de Portola led an expedition to present-day San Diego, where he established a presidio, or fortress, followed by a second fort in Monterey the next year. Spanish rule ended in 1821 when Mexico won it’s independence from Spain. The next year, Mexico took control of California. Most of the new Californians wanted the territory to be governed by the United States.

In 1846 a ragtag band of American settlers sprang into action; they took over the fort at Sonoma, Mexico’s headquarters in northern California, and raised a homemade flag bearing a star and a grizzly bear and the words California Republic.

California officially became a US territory. Statehood followed in 1850.

Los Angeles County is the largest manufacturing center in the country; it is also home to Hollywood, the locus of the biggest moviemaking business in the world. In the north, the San Francisco Bay area has become the worlds leading center for biotechnology. Between Palo Alto and San Jose stretches the famed Silicone Valley, the birthplace of the information-technology revolution. California also leads the nation in wine production in Sonoma and Napa counties.

Service industries: Finance, insurance, and real estate; medical facilities; entertainment companies; wholesale and retail trade.

Manufacturing: Transportation equipment, food processing.

Agriculture: Milk, beef cattle, eggs, sheep, turkey, grapes, almonds, strawberries, walnuts, tomatoes, lettuce, cotton.
