 Welcome to California

CALIFORNIA

Capital City: Sacramento
Nicknames: Golden State, El Dorado
Population, 2005 estimate 36,132,147 residents

State?s Flag: Historic Bear Flag was raised at Sonoma on June 14, 1846, by a group of American settlers in revolt against Mexican rule. The flag was designed by William Todd on a piece of new unbleached cotton. The star imitated the lone star of Texas. A grizzly bear represented the many bears seen in the state. The word, "California Republic" was placed beneath the star and bear. It was adopted by the 1911 State Legislature as the State Flag.

Although California was sighted by Spanish navigator Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542, its first Spanish mission (at San Diego) was not established until 1769. California became a U.S. territory in 1847 when Mexico surrendered it to John C. Frémont. On Jan. 24, 1848, James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill, starting the California Gold Rush and bringing settlers to the state in large numbers. By 1964, California had surpassed New York to become the most populous state.

Based on many different factors California, also known as Golden State, is considered to be one of the most desirable places to live. With unlimited amount of attractions that include indoor and outdoor fun, year-round sunny climate and, great sandy beaches during the summer and ski resorts in winter California is the place to be.

Los Angeles is the largest city in the federal state of California, and since 1984 the second largest in the United States, when it ousted Chicago from that position. Initially founded in September 4, 1781 as part of Spanish-controlled Mexico, the settlement was christened El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del Río de Porciúncula.

Los Angeles was incorporated as a city in the U.S. State of California on April 4, 1850. Other points of interest include Yosemite National Park, Disneyland, Hollywood, the Golden Gate Bridge, Sequoia National Park, San Simeon State Park, and Point Reyes National Seashore.
