Here is a brief introduction to the state of Colorado.
Capital City: Denver
State’s Flag: Adopted in 1911, features colors that represent the state: the stripes signify the blue sky and the white snowcapped peaks; the red C stands for Colorado, Spanish for “colored red”; and the golden ball symbolizes the state’s gold production.
Spain claims Colorado in 1706. After taking control of the territory during Napoleonic Wars, France sells eastern Colorado to U.S. as part of Louisiana Purchase. In 1806 Lt. Zebulon M. Pike’s expedition sights Rocky Mountains. In 1848 U.S. wins western Colorado after Mexican War. Colorado joins the Union as 38th state in 1876. Since 1913, when Norwegian Carl Howelson launched the first ski jump at Steamboat Springs, Colorado has developed some of the best slopes in the country at resorts like Aspen, Breckenridge, Telluride, and Vail. Skiing now leads a tourist industry that draws $6 billion a year to the state and employs nearly 10 percent of its workforce. North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) completes its underground headquarters in Cheyenne Mountain in 1966. In1980-1990 Major growth of technological industries occurs in Colorado. The 1980s brought tremendous growth to Denver, which has become the financial, manufacturing, and marketing capital of the entire mountain region. With the boom, however, came the downside of modern economic success: pollution, inflation, crime, and rush-hour traffic. Colorado’s challenge today is that of the entire modern West: to retain the advantages of civilization in surroundings of natural beauty and to accommodate the new hordes of latter-day pioneers without destroying the lifestyle that lured them west in the first place.
