Here is a brief introduction to the state of Connecticut.
Capital City: Hartford
State’s Flag: Three grapevines adorn a white shield on Connecticut’s state flag, adopted in 1895. The state motto is below the shield.
Explorer Adrian Block sails up Connecticut River in 1614 and claim land for Netherlands. In 1633 colonists from Massachusetts establish first English settlement in Connecticut Valley. Among their leaders was Tomas Hooker, a minister who believed that the election of magistrates was a civil, not a religious, obligation. In 1636 he and his followers founded Hartford, destined to become the capital of the state. The first four decades of English settlement in Connecticut saw the newcomers battle native Pequot Indians and chase out Dutch traders who had come north from the own capital at New Amsterdam (later New York) and established a fort. The farsighted founders of Connecticut built to last. At Guilford stands the Henry Whitefield House; dating back to 1639, it is the oldest stone dwelling in New England. Also created that year was a document called Fundamental Orders, often regarded as the world’s first written constitution. Nearly a century later Connecticut stood foursquare for American independence.
Today, Connecticut factories make aircraft parts, helicopters, submarines, bearings, computers and medical instruments. Hartford has the oldest U.S. newspaper—the Hartford Courant, established 1764.
