Renowned for its bluegrass and bourbon, Kentucky is a land of charm and beauty. Nestled between the Appalachian Mountains to the east and the Mississippi River to the west, this state where North meets South boasts precipitous gorges, 1,100 miles of waterways, thunderous waterfalls, and the world’s longest cave system known. Plentiful game and a temperate climate drew members of the Adena tribe to the Kentucky area, perhaps as early as 1100 B.C. The Adena, unlike earlier nomadic tribes, built permanent settlements, erecting stockaded villages and creating huge burial mounds to honor their dead. Recognizing its potential as a hunting ground, later tribes like the Cherokee and Iroquois hunted the rumpled hills, thick forests, and lush valleys in pursuit of buffalo, elk, and deer. The first white man to set foot in Kentucky was Dr. Thomas Walker, who in 1750 was sent by a Virginia land company seeking to expand its holdings. Almost 20 years later, Daniel Boone led a party of hunters across the Cumberland Gap from North Carolina. Boone was so taken with Kentucky that in 1775 he returned with his family and built a fort called Boonesborough. Soon other white settlers journeyed through the gap to stake out claims. In 1775-1783 Pioneers defend themselves against Indians who aided by the British, attack Colonial settlements during Revolutionary War. Kentucky joins the Union as 15th state in 1792. In 1815 first steamboats travel between Louisville and New Orleans, making it easier for Kentucky to export products. In 1861 Kentucky, a neutral state, is Confederate forces during Confederate forces during Civil War. In 1875 First Kentucky Derby is held. In Black Patch War, angry farmers smash tobacco monopoly by burning warehouses and field’s in1904-1909. In 1937 U.S. Treasury opens gold depository at Fort Knox. In 1944 Kentucky Dam is finished, creating Kentucky Lake. In 1969 Tennessee Valley Authority completes its largest steamgenerating plant in Muhlenberg County. In 1988 Voters approve the establishment of a state lottery. In 1990 the Kentucky Education Reform Act is passed.
