Here is a brief introduction to the state of Massachusetts.

Capital City: Boston
Nicknames: Bay State

Population over 6.4 million residents

State’s Flag: Adopted in 1971, the state flag features an Indian-a state symbol. A star represents Massachusetts as one of the 13 colonies.

To the sea-weary Mayflower passengers who sighted present-day Provincetown Harbor in the autumn of 1620, the Massachusetts coast must have seemed particularly harsh and barren; they were, after all, headed for the warm and fertile colony of Virginia. But starting at that uninviting coast, the pioneers who founded Massachusetts created a commonwealth that would serve as a laboratory for bold experiments in politics, education, religion, and the arts.

John Cabot explores Massachusetts coast in 1498. The story of the first Massachusetts settlements was largely written along the coast. The Pilgrims’ Plymouth Colony-which is recalled at today’s Plimoth Plantation-occupied much of southeastern Massachusetts until it was united with the Massachusetts Bay Colony later in the 17th century. Massachusetts Bay, which like Plymouth was founded by Puritan dissenters from England’s Anglican Church, made Boston its capital in 1630.

Farther north along the coast stood Salem, still a small town when witchcraft hysteria and the subsequent executions gripped adjacent Danvers village in the 1690s, and Gloucester, a port intimately associated with cod fishery from the time of its founding in 1623. Just inland, beyond the bustle of the docks, yeomen with their axes and plows carved the country towns whose names still conjure an image of white steeples and village greens. Two of these - Lexington and Concord-evoke a great deal more.

A century and a half separated the landing of the rust English settlers from the civil discord that led to the Revolutionary War. During the course of that long era, Massachusetts matured from a small, church-centered colony to a prosperous secular commonwealth, and Boston became one of the busiest ports in the English-speaking world. One aspect of the Puritans’ legacy that resonated through the years, however, was their emphasis on sound education. Harvard College was founded in Cambridge in 1636; 11 years later, Massachusetts law required towns comprised of more than 50 families to provide primary schooling for their children.

Twenty people are convicted of witchcraft and hanged at Salem Village in 1962. In 1773 Boston Tea Party protests British taxation. Revolutionary War begins at Lexington and Concord in 1775. In 1788 Massachusetts becomes sixth state to enter the Union. In 1796 John Adams of Massachusetts is elected the second U.S. president. In 1824 John Quincy Adams is elected sixth U.S. president. In 1960 Senator John F. Kennedy is elected president. In 1988 Governor Michael Dukakis signs bill guaranteeing health insurance to all state residents.

Service industries: Health-care facilities, schools and universities, banking, insurance, real estate.

Manufacturing: Scientific instruments, electrical equipment.

Agriculture: Greenhouse and nursery products, cranberries, milk.
