Here is a brief introduction to the state of Minnesota.
Capital City: Saint_Paul Population over 5 million residents
State’s Flag: The state flag, adopted in 1957, displays a version of the state seal. The seal shows an Indian, a man plowing, and a tree stump.
Long the most remote northern outpost of the American frontier, Minnesota has matured into a state whose economy makes excellent use of its natural resources, technological savvy, and cultural riches. An ever-increasing number of visitors are attracted to Minnesota’s stunning scenery, friendly cities, and diverse attractions. For centimes the Dakota Indians were the sale occupants of Minnesota. Their first competitors for the land were the Ojibwa Indians, who had been displaced by whites from regions farther east. Then, in 1679, a French fur trader, Daniel Greysolon, Sieur Duluth (for whom the city of Duluth is named), claimed the territory in the name of the French king Louis XIV. He was probably the first white man to set foot in Minnesota. Following on Greysolon’s heels in 1680 was a Belgian missionary, Father Louis Hennepin. He was exploring the upper Mississippi River, when some Dakota Indians captured him and took him to an area near what is now Minneapolis. Hennepin was the first white man to see (and name) the Falls of Saint Anthony, a 50-foot waterfall on the Mississippi River. With the founding in 1819 of Fort Snelling, a military post at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers, the United States took control of Minnesota, the western portion of which it had gained in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Treaties with the Dakota and Ojibwa Indians over the next several years opened the area to settlers. In 1849 Minnesota becomes a U.S. territory. In 1851 most of southern Minnesota ceded by Sioux Indians. In 1858 Minnesota Joins the Union as 32nd state. In 1959 opening of Saint Lawrence Seaway makes Duluth westernmost Atlantic port. In 1976 Minnesotan Walter Mondale is elected vice president under Jimmy Caner. In 1990 Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev visits Minnesota. In 1998 Minnesota becomes home to largest ethnic Hmong population in United States.
