Here is a brief introduction to the state of Missouri.
Capital City: Jefferson City Population over 5.7 million residents
State’s Flag: The state flag, adopted in 1913, is red, white, and blue to symbolize loyalty to the Union. The coat of arms in the center is circled by 24 stars, showing Missouri’s status as the 24th state.
Once known as the “Mother of the West,” Missouri was the place from which homesteaders and gold rushers set off to seek their fortunes along the Oregon and Santa Fe trails. Many of those who came, however, settled here instead, enticed by the state’s bountiful waters, abundant resources, and unexpected natural splendor. For thousands of years Missouri has lured visitors by means of its major waterways-the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. The first people to settle in the area, possibly as early as 20,000 years ago, were the mound builders. By the time the first Europeans-Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet - arrived in 1673, the Mound Builders were long gone, replaced by Missouri, Fox, Shawnee, and Osage Indians. Indian tales shared with the European visitors told of gold, silver, and furs for the taking. These stories soon drew many fortune seekers, and although only lead and salt were found, these substances were worth their weight in gold in the 18th century. In 1735 miners and trappers established the first permanent European settlement, Ste. Genevieve on the Mississippi River. By the early 1800s opportunity seekers were arriving in droves. Although the new settlers were mainly Northerners, the territory’s leadership was dominated by slaveholders, whose cotton plantations thrived along the Missouri River. In 1818 the state petitioned for admission to the Union as a slave state, spurring the first clash between North and South that would lead to the Civil War. The conflict was defused, for a time, by the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which allowed for the practice of slavery. In 1857 Dred Scott decision in Missouri escalates slavery crisis. Pony express service begins in St. Joseph in 1860. In 1882 Jesse James is killed by Robert Ford at St. Joseph. In 1927 Charles Lindbergh of St. Louis makes first solo flight across Atlantic. In 1931 Bagnell Dam is built, forming the Lake of the Ozarks. In 1945 Harry S. Truman of Independence becomes president. In 1965 Gateway Arch is completed in St. Louis. In 1992 Missouri voters approve riverboat gambling excursions on the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. In 1993 Flooding devastates parts of Missouri and the Midwest.
