In 1743 France’s La Verendrye brothers reach the “Shining Mountains” of Montana. U.S. buys eastern Montana as part of Louisiana Purchase in 1803. In 1805-1806 Lewis and Clark explore region while traveling to and from the Pacific Ocean. In 1846 U.S. gains northwestern Montana in treaty with England. In 1862 thousands of prospectors flock to Grasshopper Creek when gold is discovered. In 1864 Montana becomes a territory. In June 1876 the warriors of the northern plains fought their last great battle at Montana’s Little Bighorn River, annihilating 210 men under Gen. George Custer’s command, including the general himself. Divided by tribal loyalties and differing stances on their grim future, however, the tribes split up and were assigned to reservations. The following year, Chief Joseph led 900 Nez Perce in a flight through Montana toward Canadian. Just three days from the Canadian border; he surrendered to the U.S. Cavalry. With Chief Joseph’s surrender, the frontier began to wither. By 1887 the northern bison herd, having been hunted down or lost in the blizzard having been hunted down or lost in the blizzard and barbed wire fenced in the open range. Huge copper and silver deposits discovered in Butte launched another mineral boom, tripling Montana’s population between 1880 and 1890. In 1889 Montana becomes 41st state. In 2000 summer wildfires scorch 1 million acres; almost 20 million acres of state and federal land are closed due to fire hazard.
