Straddling the invisible border between the Midwest’s farmlands and the Great Plains, Nebraska runs west from the Missouri River in a wide expanse of fields and grasslands. Initially believed to have a climate too hostile for cultivation, today America’s “Cornhusker State” feeds millions while proudly touting its pioneer heritage.

In 1803 U.S. receives Nebraska as part of Louisiana Purchase and in 1804 Lewis and Clark explore eastern Nebraska. In 1820 Missouri Compromise prohibits slavery in Nebraska. In 1833 U.S. government buys all of Pawnee land in Nebraska south of Platte River. In 1841 First wagon train traverses Oregon Trait beginning a “Great Migration” westward. In 1854 Nebraska Territory is created. Missouri, Oto, and Omaha tribes cede their lands west of Missouri River. In 1862 Homestead Act is passed, allowing widespread settlement in Nebraska. In 1867 Nebraska joins the Union as 37th state. In 1874-1877 Grasshoppers devastate Nebraska’s crops. In 1877 Crazy Horse and Sioux warriors surrender, ending Indian resistance in state.

In 1904 Kinkaid Homestead Act opens settlement of Sand Hills and Panhandle regions. In 1933 State declares suspension of farm mortgage foreclosures. In 1939 Petroleum is discovered in southeastern Nebraska. In 1942 Completion of Kingsley Dam creates Lake C. W. McConaughy. In 1948 Strategic Air Command headquarters is established near Omaha. In 1985 defaulted farm loans cause failure of 13 banks. In 1987 Nebraska legislature adopts two measures that authorize tax incentives for businesses intending to create new jobs in the state.
