Here is a brief introduction to the state of New Hampshire.

Capital City: Concord
Nicknames: Granite State, Mother of Rivers, Switzerland of America, White Mountain State

Population over 1.2 million residents

State’s Flag: The state flag was adopted in 1909. The state seal in the center depicts the Revolutionary War frigate Raleigh. Surrounding the seal is a laurel wreath and nine stars, which represent New Hampshire as the ninth state.

Renowned as the “Granite State” as much for its uncompromising Yankee spirit as for its rugged stone foundations, New Hampshire is proud of its superlatives. Within its borders are the highest mountain in the northeastern United States, Mount Washington, and the remote headwaters of the Connecticut, New England’s longest river. New Hampshire also cherishes its political role as the site of the nation’s first presidential primary every four years.

The ancestral lands of the Abenaki and Pennacook Indian confederations were colonized by the English beginning in 1623, when a small party of settlers established a fishing and trading center on the coast just south of present-day Portsmouth. Penetration of the interior was gradual and slow; throughout the colonial period, New Hampshire’s political, social, and commercial life revolved around the bustling shipbuilding and mercantile capital of Portsmouth.

Eighteenth- and early-19th-century Portsmouth was a center of wealth and refinement, virtually on a par with Boston. Ample evidence of this early prosperity survives in its handsomely restored mansions, such as the 1763 Moffatt-Ladd and 1784 Governor John Langdon houses. In the heart of Portsmouth, the 10-acre, 40-building Strawbery Banke restoration celebrates the city’s rich history as well as its present-day commitment to historic preservation.

In 1776 New Hampshire is the first colony to declare independence from England. In 1788 New Hampshire becomes ninth state after ratifying U.S. Constitution. In 1849 the nation’s first state general library law is enacted. In 1853 Franklin Pierce of Hillsboro becomes 14th U.S. president. In 1961 Alan B. Shepard, Jr., from East Derry, becomes first American to travel in space. In 1964 New Hampshire holds the first legal U.S. lottery since the 1890s. In 1986 Christa McAuliffe, a Concord schoolteacher and a Challenger crew member, is killed in space shuttle explosion. In 1997 Portsmouth chosen by Money magazine as the nation’s fifth-best place to live.

Service industries: Education, health care, real estate, tourism.

Manufacturing: Machinery, scientific instruments, electrical equipment.

Agriculture: Dairy products, eggs, hay, apples, potatoes, sweet corn, maple syrup, beef cattle, hogs.

Mining: Sand and gravel, granite.
