Here is a brief introduction to the state of New Mexico.

Capital City: Santa Fe
Nicknames: Land of Enchantment, Sunshine State, Cactus State

Population over 1.8 million residents

State’s Flag: The state flag, adopted in 1925, displays the sun symbol of the Zia Pueblo Indians. Red and gold were the colors of Queen Isabella of Spain, who sent conquistadores to the New World.

Mountains clad with fragrant pinon and juniper forests; sagebrush deserts spangled with wildflowers; adobe houses in warm earthen tones; the western plains unfurling in a timeless sweep beneath a sky of crystalline blue-so many artists have tried to capture the beauteous essence of this quintessentially Southwestern state.

In 1540 Francisco Vasquez de Coronado explores New Mexico. The beginning of Spanish settlement in 1598 ushered in a 300-year period during which New Mexico was a colony-first of Spain and later of Mexico. Well before the Pilgrims set sail for New England, Spanish settlers were traveling north along the Rio Grande into New Mexico’s north central region, establishing missions and ranches along the way. In 1610 they founded the town of Santa Fe-the oldest capital city in the United States and the second-oldest permanent settlement (after St. Augustine, Florida). New Mexico existed as a distant outpost, isolated from the rest of Spain’s holdings in the New World. In 1680 Pueblo Indians force Spanish 188 settlers to flee to Mexico. In 1692-96 New Mexico is reconquered by Spaniards.

In 1821 Mexico wins independence from Spain; New Mexico becomes part of Mexico. William Becknell blazes Santa Fe Trail from Missouri. In 1848 Mexico cedes New Mexico to U.S. after Mexican War. In 1886 Warfare between the Apache and white settlers ends with surrender of Geronimo. New Mexico joins the Union as 47th state in 1912 and in 1924 Gila National Forest becomes the first U.S. wilderness area. In 1945 first atomic bomb is tested at Trinity Site near Alamogordo. In 1970 Taos Pueblo Indians gain title to 48.000 acres in Carson National Forest. In 1986 Gov. Toney Anaya declares New Mexico a sanctuary for Central American refugees. In 1998 New Mexico celebrates its 400th anniversary; commemorating the 1598 founding by Juan de Onate.
