Here is a brief introduction to the state of Ohio.
Capital City: Columbus
State’s Flag: Adopted in1902, is a two-pointed pennant. The 17th stars represent Ohio as the 17th state. The red and white circle stands for the letter O (for Ohio) and the buckeye nut.
European exploration of what is now Ohio may date to a visit by French explorer Robert Cavelier, sieur de La Salle, to the Ohio River valley in 1670. La Salle claimed the region for France, although, like most of the fur-ridge North American interior, it was a bone of contention between France and Great Britain for almost a century. Ohio finally passed into British hands with the conclusion of the French and Indian War in 1763. After the Revolutionary War, Ohio was turned other to the Americans and became part North West Territory. Today Ohio is the third ranking industrial state in the United States. The manufacturing centers are located in major cities. Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dayton, Youngstown and Steubenville; and Toledo. Ohio is defined by its water ways. The Ohio River, which winds along a tortuous but navigable road from Western Pennsylvania to Ohio’s South Eastern boundary with Kentucky and Indiana, forms the state’s entire southern border. In the north, Ohio has more then 230 miles of frontage on Lake Erie, part of an international waterway that provides access from the Atlantic Ocean far into the North American interior.
