Since it’s founding as a “holy experiment” in religious tolerance, many important words and ideas have come out of Pennsylvania. The Articles of Confederation, the Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution were all written here. Later, when the nation’s mettle was tested during the Civil War, America once again found its voice in the state. It was on the battlefield at Gettysburg that Abraham Lincoln’s short but eloquent speech captured all the pain and purpose of the struggle. Called the Keystone State for its central location among the original Thirteen Colonies, Pennsylvania stands center stage in the drama of American history as well.

In 1609 Henry Hudson explores Delaware Bay. In 1643 Swedes establish settlement on Tinicum Island in Delaware River. In 1655 The Dutch conquer the Swedish colony. In 1664 English troops take over Dutch territory. In 1681 King Charles II grants Pennsylvania to William Penn, who establishes colony as “holy experiment”.

In 1744 Benjamin Franklin founds American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia. The French and Indian War begins in western Pennsylvania in 1754. Declaration of Independence is adopted in Philadelphia in 1776 and in 1780 State passes first abolition law, providing for the gradual emancipation of slaves. In 1787 Constitutional Convention meets in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania becomes second state to ratify Constitution. In 1790-1800 Philadelphia is capital of the United States. In 1792 Shoemakers in Philadelphia establish first labor union in the country than in 1794 Federal troops squelch a tax protest called the Whiskey Rebellion.

In 1856 First Republican National Convention is held in Philadelphia. In 1859 Titusville is site of nation’s first commercial oil well. In 1863 Civil War Battle of Gettysburg is important victory for Union forces. In 1886 The American Federation of Labor is founded in Pittsburgh. In 1889 Johnstown flood kills more than 2,000 people.

In 1920 KDKA radio station in Pittsburgh becomes first in world to broadcast daily. In 1940 first section of Pennsylvania Turnpike opens. It is the country’s first multilane highway. In 1972 Tropical storm Agnes kills more than 50 people. In 1979 Accident occurs at Three Mile Island nuclear power plant near Harrisburg. In 1982 Steel plants begin to close because of growing foreign competition and decreasing domestic demand. In 1985 Series of tornadoes in Pennsylvania kills 65 people and causes approximately $375 million in damages. In 2001 Governor Tom Ridge resigns after President Bush appoints him to head the Office of Homeland Security, a new Cabinet position created after the terrorist attacks, of September 11.
