Here is a brief introduction to the state of Texas.
Capital City: Austin
Nickname: Lone Star State
Population: over 22 million residents
State’s Flag: Adopted in 1939, has one “lone star.” The blue in the flag stands for loyalty, the red for bravery, and the white for purity.
The first white men arrived on Galveston Island sometime in 1528 after being shipwrecked off the Texas Gulf Coast. After the Indian attack only the expedition’s leader, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, a Moor named Esteban and two other survived.
For the next two centuries most white visitors came to Texas with the same plan: to find gold. The Spanish establish stable missions: in 1716 at Nacogdoches, in 1718 at San Antonio, and in 1749 at Goliad.
In 1821 Mexico won independence from Spain. Texas became part of Mexico, Anglo-Americans settled Texas. In 1836 the Texas revolution began. In 1936 Americans lost Battle of the Alamo, they later won Battle of San Jacinto and form Republic of Texas. In 1845 Texas join the Union as 28th state.
