Here is a brief introduction to the state of Utah.
Capital City: Salt Lake City Population over 2.3 million residents
State’s Flag: The state flag, adopted in 1913, displays the state seal. The seal shows a beehive, symbolizing Industriousness, on a shield. A bald eagle sits on the top of the shield. The date 1896 is the year the shield was adopted; 1847, the year the Mormons first settled Utah.
Carved from the desert by Mormon pioneers, Utah began like America itself, as a haven from religious persecution. Salt Lake City-encircled by mountains, a desert, a vast arid plateau, and a giant salt lake-was to be the capital of a great promised land in the wilderness. But the early Mormon vision of a self-sustaining, communal theocracy died with the coming of the railroad, giving way to a modern Utah that boasts a flourishing economy, lavish ski resorts, and a world-renowned choir. In 1776 Silvestre velez de Escalante and Francisco Atanasio Dominguez explore Utah. On July 24, 1847, Brigham Young’s wagon train arrived in northwestern Utah. Sick with mountain fever, Young lifted himself from his cot and, according to Mormon lore, said simply, “This is the place.” In 1849 Mormons found the state of Deseret. The U.S. government incorporated the Utah Territory in 1850. Federal troops arrived in 1857 and again in 1862; the second batch was commanded by Col. Patrick Edward Connor, who urged his soldiers to mine the mountainside for precious metals. Before long, silver was discovered in nearby Park City and copper in the Oquirrh Mountains. Then, in 1869, the final golden spike was driven into the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory. The Mormons suddenly found themselves part of a hungry national economy that brought with it manufactured goods; non-Mormon settlers, and the meddling interference of federal authorities. In 1896 Utah became a state; it was still primarily Mormon, but it was no primarily Mormon, but it was no longer the peaceable kingdom. In 1952 Rich uranium deposits are discovered near Moab. In 1964 Flaming Gorge Dam begins generating electrical power. In 1985 Great Salt Lake floods region. In 1997 Utah celebrates its 150th anniversary since Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley. In 1999 a tornado rips through Salt Lake City causing $100 million in property damage.
