Here is a brief introduction to the state of Virginia.

Capital City: Richmond
Nicknames: Old Dominion, Cavalier State, Mother of Presidents, Mother of States, Mother of Statesmen

Population over 7.3 million residents

State’s Flag: The state flag, adopted in 1931, displays the state seal. On the seal Virtue is clad in the clothes of an Amazon. Holding a spear and a sheathed sword, she triumphs over Tyranny, whose crown lies nearby and who holds a broken chain in his hand.

From the westernmost reaches of the Appalachian Plateau to the eastern Atlantic shores of the Delmarva Peninsula, Virginia abounds with natural splendor. Mountainous terrain characterizes the western part of the state, where the Shenandoah Valley, a broad, 150mile-long upland is nestled between the Allegheny and Blue Ridge mountains. Tobacco thrives in the Piedmont and Tidewater regions to the east, bounded by historic Chesapeake Bay. Strategically located on the southern end of the bay, Virginia’s massive Hampton Roads Harbor has been one of America’s most vital shipping and military ports from colonial times to the present.

Concerned about Spanish and French progress in settling the New World, England’s King Tames decided to secure a foothold by establishing a trading post on the Chesapeake Bay. In 1607 three ships carrying 104 men and boys landed at a site they called Jamestown, a 1.500-acre island that Capt. John Smith, the head of the colony, considered to be “a verie fit place for the erecting of a great cittie.” These first settlers were not yeoman farmer’s intent on cultivating the wilderness but, rather, adventurers and entrepreneurs in search of gold, silver, and other valuables. Nor were they the first Englishmen to attempt to settle in what would be known as Virginia. Two earlier attempts had been made at a place called Roanoke, in 1584 and again in 1587. The first group returned home after a year; the second group mysteriously vanished.

Jamestown becomes first permanent English settlement in America in 1607. In 1612 John Rolfe introduces tobacco growing and exporting to colony. In 1619 House of Burgesses, America’s first representative assembly, convenes. Dutch traders sell Africans as indentured servants. In 1624 Virginia is designated a royal colony. In 1693 College of William and Mary is founded.

In 1765 Patrick Henry spurs passage of Stamp Act Resolves. In 1776 Virginia convention declares Virginia independent and in 1788 Virginia becomes 10th state. In 1789 George Washington of Virginia is sworn in as first U.S. president. In 1792 Kentucky is created from three Virginia counties. In 1819 Thomas Jefferson founds University of Virginia. In 1863 West Virginia becomes separate state. In 1870 Virginia rejoins the Union. In 1989 L. Douglas Wilder becomes first elected black governor in U.S. history. In 2007 Celebration planned for the 400th anniversary of the first settlers in Jamestown.

Service industries: Community, business, and personal services, finance, insurance, real estate.

Manufacturing: Textiles, cigarettes, transportation equipment.

Agriculture: Beef cattle, broiler chickens, milk, tobacco, corn, apples, peanuts, potatoes, tomatoes.
