Here is a brief introduction to the state of Washington.
Capital City: Olympia Population over 6.1 million residents
State’s Flag: The state flag, adopted in 1923, displays the state seal. It shows a picture of George Washington, for whom the state was named; the green background represents Washington’s forests.
Wet and wild, Washington is a rain-splashed, evergreen wonderland. Temperate rain forests, fjord like bays, and idyllic islands hug the state’s shoreline; volcanic mountains run down its spine; prairies and farmland blanket its eastern reach. Set amid this splendor are colorful coastal towns and a bustling metropolis. With one foot planted in the past and the other striding into the future, Washington is a rich mix of Native American tradition, pioneer spirit, and Western independence. When the English explorer Sir Francis Drake sailed along the western coast of North America in 1579 in his ship the Golden Hind, his voyage sparked a competition between Britain and Spain for control of the area. Although the Spanish were eager to best their English rivals, no serious trips were made to the West Coast until 1774, when Juan Perez, on his way back to Mexico from Canadian waters, spotted a gleaming peak in a mountain range. He named the peak El Cerro Nevada de Santa Rosalia (“The Snowy Hill of St. Rosalia”). The mountain would later be renamed Olympus. On Perez’s heels came fellow Spaniards Bruno Heceta and Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, who charted the coastline on a trip north from California in 1775. They landed north of the Columbia River and claimed the entire area for Spain. Not to be outdone, English explorer Capt. James Cook traveled to the Pacific Northwest in 1778 with instructions to find a waterway that linked the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic. Because heavy storms made it impossible for him to approach the rocky coast, Cook never set foot on land, nor did he find a Northwest Passage. He did find sea otters, however, whose pelts or6ved to be so valuable that British and American fur trappers and traders flocked to the region in great numbers. In 1792 British naval officer George Vancouver, who had served on two of Cook’s voyages, sailed into Puget Sound while making his own attempt to find the elusive Northwest Passage. The same year, American explorer Robert Gray sailed into the mouth of the Columbia River. His discovery brought the Americans into competition for control over the Pacific Northwest and established America’s foothold in the region. In 1805 Lewis and Clark follow Snake and Columbia rivers to Pacific Ocean. In 1818 U.S. and Great Britain agree to jointly occupy Oregon region, including Washington. In 1825 Hudson’s Bay Company establishes Fort Vancouver. In 1846 Canada-Washington boundary is set at 49th parallel. In 1853 Washington Territory is organized. In 1855 Indian wars begin. In 1883 Northern Pacific Railroad reaches Spokane. In 1889 Washington joins the Union as 42nd state. In 1964 U.S. and Canada approve final form of Columbia River Treaty of 1961. In 1989 Washington celebrates its centennial of statehood. In 2001 Seattle Communist Party office closed.
