Here is a brief introduction to the state of West Virginia.

Capital City: Charleston
Nicknames: Mountain State

Population over 1.8 million residents

State’s Flag: The state flag, adopted in 1929, displays the state seal. A miner and a farmer flank a rock showing the date of West Virginia’s statehood. A pair of rifles represents the readiness to fight for freedom.

The only state that separated from another, West Virginia has had a tumultuous history that includes the remarkable mound building by prehistoric peoples, major Revolutionary War engagements, tragic Civil War battles, and the violent struggles of unions to gain a foothold in the coal mines. There’s also the impressive natural wealth of the state’s many recreational rivers, mysterious valleys, and soaring peaks that make West Virginia the most mountainous state east of the Mississippi River.

Western Virginia was the site of two key engagements during the Revolutionary War: the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774, sometimes considered the first skirmish of the war, and the successful defense of Fort Henry against a British and Indian attack in 1782, often thought to be the Revolution’s final armed event. During Virginia’s first 80 years of statehood, conditions developed in its western counties that sowed the seeds of discontent: the growth of an economy fed by the river systems of the Midwest, rather than by coastal trade; and an agricultural system in which large plantations-and thus slavery-were impractical. Combined with complaints of poor representation in Virginia’s legislature, these differences made some of western Virginia’s mountain folk yearn for separation.

As early as 1776, in fact, these people had sought the right to break away from Virginia. But it was Virginia’s secession from the Union in 1861 that gave the westerners the chance to follow their own course. That year, a reorganized Virginia government loyal to the Union was formed in Wheeling, and two years later a fully autonomous West Virginia-which for a time had been named Kanawha-became the 35th state. Meanwhile, the Civil War raged on. An estimated 632 military actions ravaged the state, and one town, Romney, changed hands 56 times.

In 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain erupts from labor dispute involving coal miners. In 1968 Explosions at Farmingham mines kill 78 people and spur new mine-safety laws. In 1993 nine people die as the result of a blizzard that paralyzes the state. In 1998 Marie Redd, professor at Marshall University, is first African-American woman elected to the state senate. In 2000 Peace talks between Israel and Syria are held in Shepherdstown. In 2004 Ten Republicans, eight Democrats, and one Libertarian seek the office of governor in the state’s most crowded primary in history.

Service industries: Transportation, utilities, telephone companies.

Manufacturing: Chemicals, steel, glassware, pottery.

Mining: Bituminous coal, natural gas, petroleum, limestone, salt, sand.
