Here is a brief introduction to the state of Wisconsin.

Capital City: Madison
Nicknames: Badger State

Population over 5.4 million residents

State’s Flag: The state flag, adopted in 1913, displays the state seal. On it, a miner and a sailor hold a shield that shows symbols of Wisconsin’s important industries. The badger stands for the state’s nickname; 1848 is the year Wisconsin joined the Union.

Lying at the exact geographic heart of North America, Wisconsin is the same distance from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Arctic Sea. Fully a third of the population of the United States lives within 500 miles of Wisconsin, making it a popular destination for travelers as well as a hub of commerce and agriculture. Yet amid its rolling hills, dense forests, and plentiful lakes, the rest of the country can seem pleasantly remote.

French explorer Jean Nicolet reaches Green Bay shore in 1634. In 1673 Louis Jolliet and Fr. Jacques Marquette explore upper Mississippi River. In 1701 First permanent settlement is established at Green Bay. In 1763 England gains Wisconsin area after French and Indian War. In 1783 U.S. gains Wisconsin with Northwest Territory.

People have exploited the riches of Wisconsin since at least the Stone Age. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Europeans came in search of furs, but settlement did not begin in earnest until 1822, with the discovery of vast outcroppings of lead. The “lead rush” was on. So eager were the miners to stake their claims that they simply dug shelters in the sides of the hills when the first chill of the harsh Wisconsin winter came on. Derided as “badgers,” the nickname stuck. These pioneers became the foundation of Wisconsin statehood and a symbol of the state’s fierce and independent spirit.

Wisconsin became a state in 1848. Six years later, outraged over the possible extension of slavery to Wisconsin, its citizens organized a new political movement at Ripon that became known as the Republican Party and soon dominated state politics. In the early 20th century, progressive Republican governors Robert M. La Follette and his son Philip introduced reforms known as the “Wisconsin idea,” aimed at bettering the 11 lives of the state’s working people. Wisconsin led the nation with such ideas as the minimum wage, aid to dependent children, unemployment pay, workmen’s compensation, industrial safety, environmental protection, and direct primaries.

In 1872 Wisconsin Dairymen’s Association is founded. In 1901 Robert M. La Follette, Sr., becomes governor and initiates Progressive era. In 1903 Wisconsin is first state to establish primary elections. In 1911 Teachers’ pensions are established in Wisconsin. In 1932 Wisconsin passes first unemployment-compensation act. In 1998 Tammy Baldwin becomes the first woman from Wisconsin elected to Congress. In 2001 Governor Tommy Thompson ends a record 14 years in office and takes position of U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Service industries: Real estate, banking, insurance.

Manufacturing: Machinery, dairy products, canned foods, beer, paper products.

Agriculture: Dairy cattle, beef cattie, hogs, corn, soybeans, peas.
